We have something new to share with you this month. Check out the video of Bob on http://ourterrain.org/iron-gate-antiques-and-restoration . This site is http://www.ourterrain.org. Bob had a great time during the interview, which was completely unrehearsed. Hope you like it!
As we mentioned last month, we’re making some changes at the store, which are intended to improve the speed of repairs. We’re also going to be making some changes to our website over the next few weeks, so please check back soon. As we’d be interested to know what you think of the upgrade, please drop Bob an e-mail after you’ve had a chance to take a look.
Since it’s the time of year when you may be making changes to your bedding, Lynne was wondering about storage of antique quilts. She learned that quilts should be stored in an archival tube or acid-free box. Cardboard boxes or plastic tubs with snap-tight lids should be avoided. Removing your quilt from storage regularly and refolding it differently to avoid creases or wrinkles is recommended. Either placing acid-free paper between the folds of the quilt or folding it between two white sheets is also recommended. Read more at http://www.ehow.com/how_5851997_care-antique-quilts.html#ixzz2gIs3EGDA. While we have several interesting antique quilts for sale, we also have several quilt tops that never got finished. Wouldn’t it be interesting to take one (or more!) of those home and turn it into a “new” vintage piece? They contain some fun fabrics including some from feed bags . . .
Speaking of quilts, I’m sure the Waterford Quilters Guild will have a marvelous exhibition at the Waterford Fair, so if you missed them at the Bluemont Fair, you may want to check them out in Waterford the first weekend of the month. Similarly, Joshua’s Hands (www.joshuashands.org) Fall Festival on the 5th will have some quilts including one donated by Iron Gate Antiques to the auction that begins at 2 p.m. They’ll also have tables where you can sign or decorate a denim quilt square for a Wounded Warrior that will be incorporated into a quilt at the next “Valiant Warrior” quilting event, which is in January. Since we made over 100 quilts at their last such event in July, LOTs of squares are needed.
Finally, check out the events this month at nearby Great Country Farms (http://www.greatcountryfarms.com/index.php/event-calendar/annual-events/fall-harvest-festival.html). They vary every weekend, but have a great Halloween/autumn flair. Plus it’s a great place to get a pumpkin!
As for special hours this month, we’ll be closed on Columbus Day, but since that’s a Monday, when we’re normally closed anyway, it’s not really “special.” Have a great month!
