March 2016

If you’ve “liked” our Facebook page, you may have already seen a picture of our featured acquisition this month since our Waterford side chair is now sporting a new diamond-weave seat. In case you aren’t familiar with them, Waterford side chairs and rockers were made locally.  Similar chairs, which feature wide, gracefully-arched splats and, since the 1840’s, acorn-shaped finials, were made in the nearby towns of Hamilton and Lovettsville.  Hickory wood was often used, which has the advantage of being very strong.  .  Additional photos are available on our website at http://irongateantiques.com/recent-acquisitions/.  If you are interested in learning more about Waterford chairs, here’s a link to a Washington Post article:  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/17/AR2008101703435.html.  Serious collectors should check out Dr. Johnson’s book, Nineteenth Century Loudoun County, Virginia Chair Manufacturing, available at http://www.waterfordfoundation.org/products-page/merchandise/books/19th-century-chair-manufacturing/.

Now that it’s March, spring should be here soon, right?  One of the signs that spring is coming is that our neighbor Great Country Farms will have their opening day on March 19th.  They’re advertising chicks to take home and raise, which sounds like an interesting adventure . . .  Here’s hoping all your adventures turn out well!
