September 2025

September 2, 2025

We hope you enjoyed the Labor Day weekend! Below is the finished chair I’d posted on FaceBook announcing our closure for the holiday. Also below is the “before” photo when the chair was painted black. In case you haven’t noticed, we’re fans of letting the beauty of the wood itself be the star. The caning on the chair is the Seven Step Strand Cane Weave, which is the one Bob does the most frequently. If you’re inclined to do it yourself, the steps are described in detail on the internet but caning, like many other skills, improves with practice.

If you have a skill that you’re willing to share, you may want to consider demonstrating it at the Joshua’s Hands Fall Festival to be held on October 11th. For those who don’t have an appropriate skill to demonstrate, no worries! There are plenty of other volunteer opportunities to make this free event a success. It will be held at Walnut Creek Farm near the intersection of Routes 7 and 9. Normally an AirBnB, owners Caleb and Whitney Kershner gifted the use of the property to Joshua’s Hands for the event. See https://www.joshuashands.org/Joshuas_Hands/Fall_Festival.html for more on the Fall Festival.

This month we have Bluemont’s biggest event of the year: the Bluemont Fair. It will be held on September 20th-21st and the entertainment schedule is already posted at https://www.bluemontfair.org/fair-schedule-2025/. This year’s fair celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Snickersville Academy, which is featured on the t-shirts and posters. Since the Academy is a bit off the main street, you may want to check out the docent-led tour to it—but on Sunday so as not to miss the Celtic Rhythm School of Dance performance at the Community Center. We will be closed on fair weekend this year, but you may see us there!
