Sorry about the delay in getting the newsletter out this month, but we were on vacation. One place that we enjoyed and would recommend is the Driehaus Museum in Chicago. Housed in the restored Nickerson Mansion, which was completed in 1883, the museum focuses on art, architecture, and design from the late 19th century to the present. Each room of the mansion is furnished with period appropriate pieces such as the 18-light Lily lamp by Tiffany Studios in the first photo below. You may note the middle photo also includes at least one Tiffany lamp, but would you have guessed the andirons in the third photo are also by Tiffany? We didn’t!
While Lynne focused on the Tiffany, which will be the subject of an upcoming newsletter, the house itself was impressive with a “fire-proof” design, which makes sense when you realize the Nickerson’s previous house was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. Their new residence, one of the largest in Chicago at the time, cost a substantial $450,000 and became known as The Marble Palace, due to the extensive use of 17 varieties of marble in the home’s entrance hall. If you find yourself in Chicago, it’s definitely worth a visit!
Closer to home, Joshua’s Hands has it’s next Valiant Warrior Quilting Event June 7-13 in Hamilton; no experience necessary. Bluemont’s Dirt Farm Brewing has Market on the Mountain on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, with unique handmade items from local artisans/vendors. And Henway Hard Cider is sponsoring a Father’s Day Fish-a-Rama (catch & release fishing) at Great Country Farms on June 20th. Hope we see you soon . . .
