May 2015

                                     May 1, 2015

As some of you may know, our dear friend and neighbor, talented stained glass artist Donna Norton passed in March.  Her beautiful home, Janney Hill in Hamilton, is for sale and there will be an auction of her personal property there on May 3rd beginning at 11 A.M.  Donna’s house was beautifully decorated with antiques.  Among other unique items, she had a number of restored period dresses displayed on mannequins such as the one below.  Something we hadn’t seen done before, but which worked really well, was using complementary fabrics to cover pieces from the same set.  Shown below are four of six pieces of an Eastlake parlor set.  Note that the rose colored chair alone uses two fabrics!  More items and auction details are available at http://www.auctionsonmain.com/.    Details about the house itself are at http://www.trulia.com/property/3197071058-15-W-Colonial-Hwy-Hamilton-VA-20158.

Did you know that May 11th-17th has been designated as Loudoun Small Business Week 2015?  We didn’t either, but as a small business would appreciate your business that week as well as the other 51 weeks of the year.  The culmination of the week will be the Spring Farm Tour, which will take place on the 16th and 17th from 10 until 4.  It seems like new farms are added every year, so it’s worth checking out the on line map at http://loudounfarms.org/index.aspx?nid=165 even if you’ve participated in previous years.

Speaking of community events, this year Hamilton Day will be on May 30th, the weekend after Memorial Day.  While children in grades K-8 can begin the day with cross-country races at the elementary school starting at 8 A.M., the parade will start at the Hamilton Safety Center at the east end of town at 11 A.M. and continue to the LDS church as the west end of town.  Afterwards there will be festivities at the school include food for sale by the Ruritans, a bake sale by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hamilton Safety Center, a 4H display, performances (including one by Celtic Rhythm School of Dance that Lynne will be in), and a bounce house for children.  This will be followed by Little League games there starting at 3 P.M.  It’s a great family-friendly event and should be a lot of fun—as long as you don’t try to drive through Hamilton during parade time!
