Did you know that in France it’s customary to give a lily of the valley, which is a sweet smelling flower, on May 1st? That tradition started in 1561 when King Charles IX received a lily of the valley as a lucky charm. May Day marks the halfway point between the beginning of spring and the summer solstice, so for those of us anxiously awaiting warm, dry weather, it should be here soon!
Meanwhile, we have a couple interesting new acquisitions at the store such as the ram’s head chair shown below:

Note the detail on the ram’s head above. This chair has just been refinished and has a new leather seat. Gorgeous, right? Photos of this and other recent acquisitions to include an oak stool with a back are available on our website at http://irongateantiques.com/recent-acquisitions/.
Our only special hours for the month are that we’ll be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30th. Other than that, weekends are great times to visit the store and there’s so much going on out our way. Consider the Dirty Dogger Race on May 22nd at the Quattro Goomba Winery in Aldie; register at http://www.dirtydogsinc.com/#!registration/cyy1. (Note: While we welcome 4-footed family members in the store, it would be better to bring them in before they get all dirty . . .) Or bring your favorite mother to the Bluemont Vineyard on Mother’s Day weekend, May 7th & 8th, for Saignee Rose with Chocolate Covered Strawberries—yum! Or head to Winchester the night of May 14th for the Ready, Set, GLOW 5K run/walk to benefit a drug-free community because who doesn’t like glowing at night? Hey, it works for lightning bugs! J Have a wonderful month . . .
