October 2014

October 1, 2014

If you are new to the newsletter this month, welcome!  If you haven’t been to the store during or since the Bluemont Fair, stop by to see us.  We’ve rearranged to highlight some of our Oriental pieces and the set of bird’s eye maple chairs Bob recently re-caned (not in the photo).

Our featured piece this month, a Walnut Victorian Caned Nursing Rocker, was also recently re-caned by Bob.  This rocker was a little more complicated than other pieces he’s done because the back required replacement in addition to the seat.  It turned out really well, though!  More photos are available at http://irongateantiques.com/recent-acquisitions/.

Now that it’s autumn, it’s time for a reminder that we still have several of Helen Jean Smith’s Hamilton Halloween prints available.  We love Helen Jean’s work and some years ago had her paint a “portrait” of our house.  More info about her is at http://www.theartgroup.org/HelenJeanSmith.html, including a photo of her Waterford print.  With the Waterford Fair coming up the 3rd through the 5th of this month, it’s very timely!

If you haven’t been before, the Waterford Fair is a wonderful event.  With live entertainment, military re-enactors, traditional American crafts, tours of historic homes, and plenty of food and beverages to choose from, there’s something for everyone!  Discounted admission tickets are available at several locations including area Harris Teeter’s stores and  Middleburg Banks.  See the Fair website for details (http://www.waterfordfoundation.org/waterford-fair/).  Proceeds from the Fair benefit the Waterford Foundation’s mission of education about, and preservation of, the National Historic Landmark village of Waterford.

Also this month, on the 11th, is the Fall Festival.  This completely free event (including lunch!) is from 10 until 5 at 38327 Charles Town Pike (Route 9), near the intersection with Rte 287.  There will be demonstrations (like sheep shearing), kids’ crafts, a petting farm, pony rides, entertainers, and an auction at 2 p.m. to support the work of Joshua’s Hands, a non-profit organization that, among other things, makes quilts for Wounded Warriors.  More info on the Fall Festival is at http://www.joshuashands.org/Fall_Festival.html.
