January 2016

January 2, 2016

We hope your new year is getting off to a good start!  We’re going to start ours by featuring two items in this newsletter.  If you’ve been following us on Facebook, you may have already seen photos of these items, but we’re including details here.  The first is a Stickley & Brandt mahogany settee that’s been completely restored.  Charles Stickley was one of five sons from an Osceola, Wisconsin family who all became furniture makers.  With his cousin Schuyler Brandt, Stickley founded the Stickley & Brandt Chair Company in Binghamton, NY in 1891; they quickly became the largest furniture dealer in the state specializing in ornately carved Victorian chairs and settees like the one below.  This piece was made in either oak or mahogany and sold for $29.60 or $35.55, respectively; a matching chair was sold separately.  In 1909 the company switched to making Arts & Crafts style furniture, which they continued until they went out of business in 1918.

Our next featured piece is the walnut caned two-section bench shown above.  It dates from the late 1800’s and is also completely restored.  Learning to cane around a corner was a challenge, but the piece turned out beautifully!  See a close up photo of the caning as well as photos of other recent acquisitions on our website at http://irongateantiques.com/recent-acquisitions/  You’ll notice that there are also a Hunzinger-style platform rocker and a lot of clocks on that page.  We’ll be talking about the clocks in the next newsletter.  (As many of you know, Bob loves clocks and is always happy to talk about them . . .)

Now that winter is upon us, we’re switching to our winter hours, which means we’re closed on Sundays now through March 31st.  We’ll be open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM until 6 PM, including on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.  If you need to make other accommodations outside these hours, please call so that we can work out a solution.  Thanks and Happy New Year!
