September 2016

September 1, 2016

It’s almost Fair time!  This year’s event is September 17th & 18th, from 10-5 each day, rain or shine.  Admission is $5, though children 10 & under are free.  No pets are allowed.  This year there will be an Indian Village to educate children about Native American culture.  And if it’s Irish culture you’re looking for, check out the Celtic Rhythm School of Dance Irish dancers at the Bluemont Community Center stage at 2 pm on the 17th.  For more info on the Fair, see bluemontfair.org &/or follow their page on Facebook.  (Don’t forget to follow our page on FB, too!)

Fall seems to be a busy time in Loudoun County with events scheduled every weekend.  For example, on the 3rd & 4th there will be live music at Great Country Farms in conjunction with their month-long Apple Gala & Cider Fest.  They’ll have hot cider donuts (yum!) and cider slushies, a 2-1/2 acre corn maze dedicated to Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran Wellness, slides, a tractor tire mountain, catch & release fishing, and an 18 hole Cow Pie Putt-Putt Golf Course.  All that while you have the opportunity to pick your own apples!

The following weekend brings a native plant sale with information, products and services for your garden sponsored by the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy (www.loudounwildlife.org) on the 10th from 9-3 at Morven Park.  On the 11th, Franklin Park will host a free Loudoun Pet Expo from 10-3, with vendors, food, demos, adoptions, children’s activities, a dog swim, a 5K and more.  People and pets are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.  See www.loudounpetexpo.com for details.

On Thursday the 15th, Stone Tower Winery is holding their 3rd annual Empty Bowls dinner with live bluegrass music.  They’re working to get 450 bowls, 60 gallons of soup, and a battalion of breads and desserts for this outdoor event to help eliminate food insecurity in Loudoun County.  Tickets are available at www.loudounemptybowls.org.

The week after the Fair brings Barktoberfest (www.barktoberfest.org) on the 24th, which is a fund raiser for the Friends of Homeless Animals.  The Festival is from 10:30-5:30 at the Loudoun County 4H Fairgrounds on Dry Mill Road, but there’s also a Glow Dog Glow event (1 mile or 5K) that evening from 7-10:30.  Bidding is already open for their on-line auction, but as it doesn’t close until the 24th, there’s still time to see what treasures you can find!

Last, but not least, because it’s so early next month, we wanted to highlight the Friends of the Thomas Balch Library event on October 2nd at The Marshall House in Leesburg.  This will be on Loudoun in the Great War and feature local author and speaker G. Terry Sharrer, the Curator of Health Sciences at the National Museum of American History.  To request an invitation, please email EVENT@BalchFriends.org.

We will be closed for Labor Day, but hope to see you soon!
