June 2019

June 1, 2019

It’s time again for the Western Loudoun Artists Studio Tour, which takes place today and tomorrow from 10 until 5. See www.wlast.org for maps and details of the artists participating. This free event provides the opportunity to visit more than 60 artists at their studios.  Even if you’ve done the tour before, new artists are being added all the time.  The art includes paintings, pottery, jewelry, photography, fiber, sculpture, and more.  Be sure to visit the Franklin Part Arts Center and Round Hill Arts Center to see multiple artists at one location; the Round Hill Arts Center is collocated with Hill High Market, which has the distinctive covered wagon on Route 7 if you’re approaching from the east.  If you aren’t particularly interested in art, it’s worth a stop there to pick up some dessert and craft beer.

Coincidentally, our recent acquisition this month isn’t an antique, but rather the so-called “Wow!” chair shown below. This chair was handmade by a friend who studied with the legendary Californian artist Sam Maloof, who made rocking chairs for Presidents Kennedy and Reagan. Made using old-fashioned techniques, the chair contains no screws or nails, and took over 100 hours to make. The chair is cherry and walnut–though we mistakenly indicated on our Facebook page that it is cherry and maple. In addition to being beautiful, the chair is incredibly comfortable, which is how it got named the “Wow!” chair. The slats on the back of the chair form to your body and, interestingly, seem to work well for people of all heights. The seat is also designed to match human anatomy, making it the most comfortable rocking chair ever! (Can you tell we want to get a pair for ourselves!)

For those interested in the progress of Bob’s Model T truck, he’s been able to get it to run—for a short time. He’s thinking he may be able to drive it in a few weeks.

Lastly, we will be closed June 13-17 as we’ll be celebrating our son Sean’s marriage and welcoming our new daughter-in-law Rachael to the family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they begin their life together!
