March 2019

March 1, 2019

You’ve probably heard the saying that if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb. We definitely seem to be hanging onto winter this year!  So, can we expect it to be gone by the end of the month?  According to the Farmer’s Almanac, this is more of a rhyme rather than a valid weather prediction.  Hard to believe that the phrase was cited as early as 1732 in Thomas Fuller’s compendium “Gnomologia: Adagies and Proverbs; Wise Sentences and Witty Sayings, Ancient and Modern, Foreign and British!” There are other weather-related rhymes about March:

  • So many mists in March you see, so many frosts in May will be.
  • As it rains in March, so it rains in June.

It will be interesting to see if these hold true this year . . .

Yet another March weather phrase is “March many-Weathers rain’d and blow’d / But March grass never did good.” That doesn’t seem at all appropriate given that this is St. Patrick’s month. (If you’ve been reading our newsletter for a while, you’ll know that rather than only one day, we celebrate the Irish all month long!) While the DC St. Patrick’s Day Parade was cancelled this year, the Alexandria Parade is scheduled for the 2nd, beginning at 12:30. Old Town Winchester will have their St. Paddy’s Day Celebration from noon until 9:00 on the 9th. The Ancient Order of Hibernians will hold its annual Gaelic Mass in honor of St. Patrick on the 11th at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington. Our neighbor Bear Chase Brewery will celebrate with Kegs and Eggs beginning at 8:00 a.m. on the 16th. And Shamrockfest will take place on the 23rd at RFK Stadium. Something for everyone!

Yet between all these events, work continues. Below are “before” and “after” photos of a maple chair that we repaired and refinished.  This is a family piece and we seem to have been getting more of those lately.  It’s a great feeling to return a finished piece to a family in its original condition.  Very satisfying!
