May 2024

This month we have some special hours to report. We will be closed the next two Saturdays, May 4th and 11th. Additionally, from now through May 10th, our hours will be 10:30 until 5:00. We apologize for this temporary inconvenience, but we’ll be out of town for family purposes, leaving Cecil in charge. We’ll be back to normal hours (10-6, Monday through Saturday) beginning May 13th.

You may remember that last month our featured product was an oak roll top desk. This month we’re featuring a walnut plantation desk, dating from the 1880s or 1890s, that we completely restored. While called a plantation desk, it is thought that desks of this type were originally for postmen because of all the cubbyholes. This style of desk that was quite popular in the 19th century has drop front, but because the base is wider than the top portion of the piece, the writing surface is supported by the bottom portion of the desk, which meant there was no need for retractable supports. The photos below show the refinished piece complete with new felt on the writing surface.

Was anyone aware that Thursday night is the time to go to breweries? Thursday night is live country music night at Bear Chase Brewing. It’s burger and fry night at Dirt Farm Brewing. If you want something more active, there’s line dancing at the Bluemont Station Brewery and Winery. Slightly further away is Drink Beer Save Cats Bingo at Vanish Brewery, but that’s only the first Thursday of the month. Sounds like one could check them all out, though it’s hard to beat enjoying a night out for a good cause. Word of warning from experience—some cats enjoy scratching furniture, which leads to needing reupholstery. With four of them at home, we could be our own best customer!

Enjoy the summery weather and come see us on or after May 13th.
