November 2021

November 1, 2021

This month’s featured item is the cheval mirror shown below. Used as a dressing mirror since the large glass allows you to see your entire outfit at one time, cheval glass or a cheval mirror got its name from the four feet it stands on since “cheval” is French for horse. Cheval mirrors were invented in Paris in the 19th century and were based on the design of the shaving or toilet mirror, which was freestanding and could be tilted. This particular piece dates from 1870-1890 and is made of maple.

We think the fun with bringing home an antique is figuring out where to put it! Sometimes this leads us to move our furniture around. At the moment we have a list of pieces that need to be moved throughout the house, but as one of the items to be moved is a heavy sofa that’s on the 3rd floor, we’re likely going to hire someone to assist. If you’ve had a good experience with a local company, we’d love to hear about it!

It’s hard to believe that we’re already getting into the holidays. Now that Halloween is over, it’s time for Pumpkin Chunkin’ at Great Country Farms. Loudoun County made this week a school holiday, so this year’s event is the 1st through the 7th. What a fun way to recycle your jack o’lanterns! The pigs and cows eat some and the rest are composted.

We will be open on Veteran’s Day. Bear’s Chase Brewery is having a Military Appreciation Day on the 14th; however, Dirt Farm Brewing offers 10% off with a military ID every day. The morning of the 24th, they’re doing a pre-turkey hill climb, which sounds interesting; if you’ve been there, you know the hill is steep—even for vehicles!

We’ll be closed on the 25th and 26th for Thanksgiving, but will reopen on the 27th for Small Business Saturday. Usually there’s a holiday market at the Bluemont Community Center that day, but we’ve not seen anything about it yet this year. Dirt Farm’s Christmas Market is is the 28th, but it you’re interested in getting a head start on shopping, there are two holiday bazaars in Hamilton on the 20th:  one at the Fire & Safety Center and the other at Hamilton United Methodist Church.

Wishing you a wonderful month and much to be thankful for!
