November 2024

November 1, 2024

Hope everyone enjoyed Halloween! It’s a great excuse to eat candy . . .

Below you’ll find pictures of a stool:  one is “before” and the other is “after” it got a new, split-cane seat and was refinished. We frequently talk about traditional caning (i.e., the kind where the seat is literally woven through holes around the seat rim, but Bob does it all: pressed-in cane, rush seats, etc. In fact, he seems to enjoy it more when there’s a challenge involved such as a pattern!

If you want to get a headstart on your holiday shopping, the Purcellville Artisan Tour is this weekend. There will be a variety of products from fiber arts to painting to wine. See https://purcellvilleartisantour.com for details.

Similarly, this year’s Holiday Bazaar hosted by the Hamilton Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary is scheduled from 9 until 2 on the 16th. The Gingersnap Girls Foundation Equine Sanctuary, one of our favorite local charities, will have a table at the event that takes place at Harmony Hall, 39071 E. Colonial Highway in Hamilton. For those who aren’t aware, Richard Tavenner, son of the first settlers in the area, built an estate called Harmony resulting in the name being used for the surrounding area; the name continues locally with the Harmony United Methodist Church, which was built on land donated by Richard and Ann Tavenner. In addition, the last important Civil War action in Loudoun County was known as The Harmony Skirmish; it took place on March 21, 1865, when a party of Union troops commanded by Colonel Marcus Reno was ambushed by a group of Confederates led by Colonel John S. Mosby. The name Hamilton came from a store founded there by Charles Bennett Hamilton; when he received permission to open a post office there, the town’s name was recorded as Hamilton. It was subsequently incorporated as the Town of Hamilton in 1875. (There will be sesquicentennial celebrations next year!)

Please note that we will be closed the 27th-29th for the Thanksgiving holiday. We’ll post a reminder on our Facebook page. That’s the best place to check for the latest info and to see other “before” and “after” photos.
