July 2023

July 1, 2023

In honor of Independence Day, this month we’re focusing the newsletter on the American flag. Many of you know that Bob collects clocks, but did you also know that he collects American flags? Weather permitting, he displays them at the house on holidays as shown below. Since the flag is modified every time another state joins the nation, Bob’s goal is to get one of each version—and there have been quite a few of them as it wasn’t until 1912 that the pattern of stars was standardized! The current 50-star version is the one that’s been in use the longest as there have been no new states since 1959.

If you’re wondering where to buy antique flags, Bob finds them at antique stores, auctions, and estate sales. The most recent (e.g., 48-star version) are relatively easy to find, but the older ones are definitely rare. You may find some 13-star versions not from the Revolutionary era, but rather from Centennial celebrations in 1876. If you plan to purchase the older flags, recommend working with a reputable dealer—and planning to spend a lot!

We’ll be closed on July 4th for the holiday. If you haven’t made plans yet, you may want to consider the parade in Purcellville, which is followed by a free bar-b-que and community celebration at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. We’ll also be closed July 22nd for Irish dance purposes. (Bob doesn’t dance, but he helps, which is also important!)

Hope you’re having a great summer! We look forward to see you when you get out to Bluemont.
