March 2023

March 1, 2023

We forgot about a newsletter last month. Sorry!

This month’s featured item is still in pieces—it’s a chair in a bucket. See photo below

If you are wondering what it takes to get from this to a chair you can sit in, Bob described the steps as follows:

  • Empty bucket on worktable and sort wood pieces by function (e.g., legs, backrest, arm rest, headrest, etc.)
  • Inspect pieces and remove all old glue by scraping it with chisels
  • Test fit each piece
  • Once pieces fit, glue legs and stretchers to the seat, clamp, and let dry 24 hours
  • Assemble back supports, fit to seat with glue, clamp, and let dry 24 hours
  • Assemble final upper section, fit to back supports with glue, clamp, and let dry 24 hours
  • Remove any excess glue
  • Clean and wax to complete the chair

Sounds like a lot of work, and as you can see, because of the need for the glue to dry, it isn’t something that can be done all at one time. Check our Facebook page to see the chair once it’s finished.

Since it’s St. Patrick’s month, we will be closing at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th; we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate, Celtic Rhythm School of Dance, Loudoun County’s first Irish dance school, will give a free performance at the Dulles Town Center Mall at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17th; this will be a combination of traditional Irish dance, contemporary Irish dance, and ballet designed to get your weekend off to a good start! Hope to see you there . . .
