February 2020

February 1, 2020

Rather than sharing Recent Acquisition that we now have for sale, this month we wanted to feature a story about a unique restoration. Shown below are before and after photos of the wheel of a tugboat.  After the passing of a client’s mother, this wheel was found among the possessions of the father who was in the process of moving in with the client.  The grandson asked about it and the family decided to restore it and place it on the wall of the father’s new room within the family’s home as a surprise.  Lovingly restored, and with a new brass plaque with the name of the tug, the wheel from the Becky Lee will welcome the client’s father to his new abode.

If you’re interested in learning a traditional skill, check out the classes offered by the Waterford Craft School. These range from broom making to leatherworking to dry stone fence construction.  See craftschool.waterfordfoundation.com.  If you’re interested in learning how to quilt or fiber arts, Joshua’s Hands, which recently completed its 2000th quilt for donation to Wounded/“Valiant” Warriors, offers classes; see joshuashands.org.

As for local events, on February 8th, the Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company, whose motto is “Neighbor Helping Neighbor Since 1976,” is hosting a dinner and silent auction beginning at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:45. Tickets are only $25; call or text 571-264-1901 for tickets.  Cash prizes are up to $1000 and you might find some antiques at the auction!  The event is at 134 Retreat Road, just east of the Shenandoah River and north of Route 7.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, 8 Chains Winery in Waterford is having cupcake pairings with their wine tastings February 14th-16th, with no reservations necessary.  This is one of the most dog-friendly wineries in the area, with a fenced, off-leash area available for our four-legged family members.

Have a great month!
